Integrated Art Schemes - Research & Development
Greater Glasgow Health Board
Jan 2006 to Jun 2006
New Victoria Hospital and New Stobhill Hospital, Glasgow City
Mainstreaming the arts into primary and secondary healthcare settings lies at the core of this project. Artists have been brought into conversation with architects in order that the physical and emotional qualities of the built environment are linked. The desire is that this connection facilitates a therapeutic experience for all users of each new hospital.
This project offers an insight into the different approaches of artists and architects in relation to hospital environments.

Consultation & Commissioning Process
This project has been developed through a process of careful consideration and consultation with partner organisations, in particular the architects for each hospital site: HLM Architects and Reiach and Hall Architects. The artists have played a key role in facilitating community engagement with the project and liaising with groups such as the steering committee, Community Action Teams, Social Inclusion Partnerships and the Arts and Regeneration Network.
Public Art Commissions and Exhibitions Ltd (PACE) were appointed to manage this project. PACE advised on the commissioning and “curating” of artists for the implementation of the developing arts strategy. PACE were able to act as a third part mechanism ensuring that the hospitals’ working groups were involved and had ownership of the selection process.
