Striding Arches Commission Plan

Dumfries & Galloway Arts Association.

May 2003 to Oct 2003

Cairnhead Forest, Dumfries & Galloway

This project can be described as a partnership between environmental art, land management and a desire to encourage public access to landscape. In this initial phase a detailed design proposal was conceived for the development of a derelict byre with extensive consultation between the artist Andy Goldsworthy, the community and the environmental organisation, Solway Heritage. Proposals were also created for a series of “arches” artworks to be sited on key hill tops. These arches would indicate a circular route on the edge of the forest and lead to the byre.

Consultation & Commissioning Process

Five themed workshops were carried out in partnership with Dumfries & Galloway Arts Association, Forestry Commission Scotland and Cairnhead Community Forest Trust. These workshops involved these partners and community groups in the development of ideas, processes and materials and informed Andy Goldsworthy’s subsequent design proposals.

In addition to these workshops, formal consultation occurred with a variety of local community groups and churches, local media, and museum and arts venues.

This project evolved from the artist’s desire to support the regeneration of his home area, Nithsdale and as such is an artist-led initiative. The project is managed by Dumfries & Galloway Arts Association in collaboration with Cairnhead Community Forest Trust.
