Consultation & Commissioning Process

The artist-craftspeople consulted with disability/access groups and curatorial staff in the creation of their design ideas. For example, in the tiling commissions the designers were asked to consider that the tiles be appreciated through touch as well as how they would be viewed by the partially sighted with the consideration of colour.

This was an open competition inviting makers from the UK and abroad to submit proposals. A selection committee comprising curatorial staff and a representative from Disability Scotland/Strathclyde Forum on Disability selected the seven successful proposals: five for furniture commissions and two for tiling commissions.

Outcomes

Seven separate commissions concluded with the following works sited in various areas of the Gallery of Modern Art:
  • Seating for portico
  • Seating for Earth Gallery
  • Seating for ‘peep-hole’, first floor eclipse
  • Seating for Water Galleries
  • Seating for Air Gallery
  • Tiling for public toilets, basement level
  • Tiling for public toilets, cafe level
