Local communities representing the six areas of the Highland Festival were involved in the creation of fifty-five textile banners. During the period of the Festival (May-June 1996) the banners hung in public places and then were returned to each community for permanent display.

Towards the cost of commissioning visual artists to create banners (working with groups of participants) for Highland Festival 1996.

Consultation & Commissioning Process

The six artists were selected by the Highland Festival managment based on previous experience and knowledge of local artists.

Each artist worked with eight different community groups over a period of one month to create the finished banners. The creative process involved collaboration between artist and community regarding the content and aesthetic of the completed work.

Outcomes

  • Fifty-five hanging textile banners created using a range of techniques including screenprinting, batik and applique
