Alex Hetherington and Janie Nicoll discuss their Visual Arts Residency at Callendar House, Falkirk.
Since November 2007, artists Alex Hetherington and Janie Nicoll have been working with the residents of the High Flats at Callendar Park, Falkirk, as they undertake a year-long Visual Arts Residency at Callender House.
This joint residency is funded by Falkirk Council and the Scottish Arts Council Partners scheme. The artists are working on a number of different outcomes, including developing new media works with the high flats residents, publishing a magazine, founding a performance group, and hosting PUBLIC – a major screening of video and film work by artists.
Exhibitions will be held at the mid and end points of the residency, while PUBLIC will be presented during ‘Big in Falkirk’, in May 2008. The project will also feature additional events that combine performance, music, video and new media, as well as the creation of a new dedicated web site.
Through regular updates to this Blog, Janie and Alex hope to present the scope of research that underpins our approach to the residency alongside an account of our motivations to present specific kinds of work in public. Alex Hetherington will also be spending time working and undertaking research in the United States, which will contribute to the development of the residency and will appear here as the work develops.
