On Movement (and Memory)

Mitchell Library, Glasgow

3 Feb 2010

Jonathan Bonfiglio, a writer and independent producer based in Mexico, will present a talk in the historically significant Burns Room in the city’s Mitchell Library that encompasses all aspects of how we move and how that helps us to create memories, in an ultimately futile attempt to immortalise ourselves.

“Never stop, Natanael. As soon as an environment has become like you, or you like your environment, it is no longer of any use to you. Then you must leave it. Nothing is more dangerous to you than your family, your room, your past.” Andrè Gide

On Movement (and Memory) is a wide-ranging talk that encompasses all aspects of how we move and how that helps us to create memories, in an ultimately futile attempt to immortalise ourselves. These days, perhaps we have come to regard ourselves as Gods, and death as beneath us. Was it always thus?

Now presented in various countries, and although dealing with memory across various societies, On Movement (and Memory) also focuses on the individual place and context where it is to be presented, in this instance Glasgow, the Glasgow Sculpture Studios and the artwork, life and practice of Jimmie Durham.

Bonfiglio(b. 1975) has written over ten plays and is currently completing his first novel, Acapulco Falls. He has produced exhibitions, concerts and plays in a variety of countries including Cambodia, Mexico, Spain, Zimbabwe and the UK. Until recently he was living on a remote mountainside in north Spain but is now based in Mexico. In addition, he has given talks on various topics in association with a wide range of institutions such as the University of Harare and the Anglo Mexican Foundation. His work has been praised as being “full of thought-provoking ideas” (London Theatre Guide) and being “like a knife to our collective throats. If this doesn’t make you think, nothing will.” (BBC Radio). He is currently working on his final play in English, Tatchell, to premiere at the Oxford Fringe Festival in March.
