PAR+RS is sponsoring The SpeedWork Symposium taking place at House for an Art Lover, Bellahouston Park, Glasgow, on Thursday 29th April 2010. Be there!

A daytime event at the House for an Art Lover, the symposium will provide an opportunity to discuss public art commissioning in relation to Jacqueline Donachie’s residency at HAL, and new work in Bellahouston Park.

Using examples of innovative, challenging and exceptional works commissioned for public space, on varying scales and of both a permanent and temporary nature, the day will provide a platform for discussion from local and international standpoints.

Keynote presentations from artists, including Heather and Ivan Morison and Toby Paterson, and commissioning organisations such as Berlin Skulpture Park and Deveron Arts, Huntly will be followed by a session on Glasgow’s past, present and future potential, focussing on A New Path, a public art project being developed in the city by Jenny Crowe and Sorcha Dallas.

The day will end with opportunities for further discussion, with invited artists and curators/ commissioning agencies contributing here. In line with the very close relationship that House for an Art Lover has established successfully with Glasgow City Council’s Land and Environmental Services, representatives from both organisations will also be in attendance. The context for the symposium – a ‘Visitor Attraction’ within a public park – is significant. The Board of the House have ambitions to continue to forge direct links with the art world both nationally and internationally, using the substantial grounds of Bellahouston Park as the basis for further contemporary art commissions.

The symposium will be chaired by Moira Jeffrey, journalist and writer, and will be recorded with the aim of publishing the transcript online, and in book form at a later date. It is open to the public but booking is recommended, and will be followed by evening event outdoors in the grounds of the House in collaboration with Glasgow School of Art

Jacqueline Donachie, Artist in Residence, House for an Art Lover is one of Scotland?s most respected contemporary artists, with a strong reputation for socially engaged projects and a particular interest in public space.

Moira Jeffrey, Chair
Highly respected Scotland on Sunday Art Critic and writer with a proven reputation as an expert chairperson.

Berlin Skulpture Park; Matthias Einhoff and Phillip Horst, two artist directors from the Park, an international site for temporary public commissioning occupying wasteground in the heart of Berlin. The Park has hosted many events since it began in 2006, including the sculpture programme for the 2008 Berlin Biennale.

Katie Daley Yates/ Situations Bristol/ The Black Cloud; The Black Cloud was a temporary structure designed by internationally acclaimed artists Heather and Ivan Morison (www.morison.info) in collaboration with architect graduate Sash Reading (www.asarch.co.uk), for Victoria Park, south Bristol, and commissioned by Situations. The presentation will focus on this hugely successful work, on site in Victoria Park, Bristol, for 6 months in 2009.

Claudia Zeiske, Director, Deveron Arts Huntly; Using its motto ‘The Town is the Venue’ Deveron Arts has transformed a small town in the North East of Scotland into an international public art venue, with a series of vibrant, ambitious projects made in collaboration with their ongoing programme of international residencies.

Toby Paterson; Artist, one of Scotland’s most exciting young artists, Toby has completed several public commissions including the new BBC Scotland HQ, and is working toward a major new commission for the Docklands Light railway international extension in London.
